Cave Paint Records -- coming 2009

Cave Paint Records will be a unique record label that I plan on offering to all of my friends and then anyone who asks. Essentially, you will be able to come to me with a recording -- mono only, for now -- and an idea for artwork and get playable record that will play on any turntable without fucking it up and can take any shape or color imaginable. The potential is even there to produce records with embedded objects such as artwork, coins, dead bugs, LEDs, etc. The startup cost to make a master would be under $10 and then every record produced would be about 50 cents.

The whole idea initially came about when I was looking into producing a #Phonepunk# record and I realized that it would cost way too much to make. I didn't want to do another CDr because to me those things are so cheap and trashy and insignificant and lousy for holding works of art. My friend Knife of Knife and the Fourth Ward Daggers has a record cutting machine and I started dreaming up things to cut with it. Eventually I decided that the ultimate way to make a #Phonepunk# record would be to cut a groove of a dialtone and make the record in the shape of an old-school telephone rotary dial.

Back in 2k8.4 I was on a mission to start my own record label, a mission which all began on this translation of an article from German Die Zeit. The article detailed how to use consumer-level casting materials to produce a copy of a vinyl LP. It's a very simple principle; because record albums are analog - that is, the information is encoded physically rather than digitally - by producing an exact cast of the record you can produce an exact copy of the music inscribed in the groove. Since all that matters is duplicating the groove you can carve a master in anything -- a year ago I was experimenting with masters carved into plastic plates from Kroger. For the raw materials I have looked everywhere and unless I find someone who is an expert in clear casting resin then the best deal would be casting products from Smooth-On. The silicone rubber for the negative is the most expensive piece of the puzzle, equating to a cost of roughly $5 per side. After that it's a matter of what kind of material you want to make the record from. I'm thinking either this (45 cents/record), this (47 cents/record), or this (89 cents/record). They actually now have an example of someone using their stuff to make a copy of an old jazz 78. Coolest thing in the world, if you ask me.

Oh yeah, and after I get Cave Paint Records up and running I'm planning on offering music videos that come on weird media like casted records and audio cassettes but that's a whole other dream....

I've been looking for some lyrics to the medieval Super Madrigal Bros. songs. Another of my dreams is for some future SMB recordings to feature singing since most of the songs we record have lyrics. We just never paid attention to them. I'm trying to imagine how you would go about approaching these, would you have to develop a medieval accent? could you do this with vocoder or auto-tune? how about like a 60s British psychedelic-folker? anyways, check this out:

Sing Care Away (To the Tune of Heart's Ease

A song in the unpublished interlude of Misogonus (about 1560):
Sing care away, with sport and play,
Pastime is all our pleaseure;
Yf well we fare, for nought we care,
In mearth consists our treasure.
Let lungis (lankies) lurke, and druges work,
We doe defie their slaverye;
He is but a foole, that goes to schole,
All we delight in braverye.

What doth't availe farr hence to saile,
And lead our life in toylinge;
Or to what end shoulde we here spende
Our dayes in urksome moylinge.
It is the best to live at rest
And tak't as god doth send it;
To haunt ech wake and mirth to make,
And with good fellowes spend it.

Check this shit, bro. Super Madrigal Bros. instrumental is here: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?njtmyg4ayjy
I dont know how the words are supposed to go so I'm downloading a CD that has a vocal version of it. The CD is called The King's Noyse of all amazing things!
