Deerhunter Videos
Deerhunter - Cover Me Slowly from Adam Bruneau on Vimeo
These are videos for songs from Deerhunter's new album Microcastle, which has just come out on Kranky and 4AD records, and which is flawless and wonderful. I had talked to Bradford about doing some video and I knew this was a fall/winter record, so upon finding myself going up Borestone mountain in Maine in the middle of October at peak season for color-changing leaves, I captured the footage that ended up in these videos. Cover Me (Slowly) kept making me think of the beginning of Twin Peaks so when I found a waterfall at the foothills of the mountain I knew it was meant to be. I changed the tint to match some of the cover art, a pink picture of someone with a skull in their eye. I played with how the video synced to the audio a number of different ways before trying random alignments and finding parts in the original unedited footage that would line up with cues in the music. I find this to be a much more natural way of scoring video to audio and usually you end up with something nice you wouldn't have thought of consciously. I really like Agoraphobia but didn't want to make a video to that unless the band members were included in it.

I was in the back seat of my aunt's car going up Borestone mountain and riding to the spot where you get out before you hike up it, and playing with the video camera as it was zoomed in really far into the trees, which gave me the idea for the Microcastle video. The speed and variety of colors flying by reminded me of the rush you get at the end of this song, which is a soaring coda after a very peaceful and reserved verse section. For the beginning I wanted some kind of fall still life that shimmered with the sound of the song. The shimmering effect was pulled off by syncing the audio amplitude directly to the opacity of the image, and I ended up using footage from the top of the mountain. Climbing Mount Borestone was like a standard hike until the last couple hundred feet, which was pretty much a vertical climb up the face of the mountain and felt like an epic task. So once we got to the very top, and you could see all over Maine, everything got very still and quiet, and I found a little pool of water with a few plants growing around it. When I went through my footage to pick out what to use for Microcastle, it felt perfect; on top of that mountain on a bright fall day, it was a timeless, concrete, physical manifestation of the song.
Here are some 3d anaglyph images I made from the trip up the mountain:

love the mountain trip images.
they remind me of peter doig's paintings
eh
excellent change in footage in Microcastle (when it kicks in) - quite apt - good work
Thanks! I was trying to make a Deerhunter video for Cryptograms like 3 years ago and it never happened so i was happy when all of this fell into place.
I just looked up Peter Doig and I see he grew up in Canada, which was just miles from where this was shot. It is some absolutely beautiful country there in the upper Appalachians.
i like "cover me" but what you did with "microcastle" was genious!
btw how did you manage to get the video to shimmer with the audio??
Thanks! Yeah I'm really happy with the Microcastle one especially.
I googled "after effects convert to audio keyframes". I couldn't figure out how to use expressions but you can copy and paste the new keyframes onto effects and transformations and still get the same effect. I used AE CS3.
awesome !!#
Adam, theses videos are oh so sick. I still owe you $10 from that vacation DVD, which is amazing. I showed some of those videos to this film class I am taking and the kids were really into it. ill see you soon for that vacation show, that'll be fun. check on this video I made for the Balkans tune zebra print on our blog.

This is excellent! Great Work!
Hi from Venezuela.
Marie.
wow just beautiful
Stumbled across this link via the Deerhunter blog...I wondered if this was the same Adam that used to post a lot on the Flaming Lips list many moons ago?
Anyway, great to be involved with Deerhunter - they are brilliant.
Daniel.
Thanks everyone! I had no idea so many people would be watching these. Ive been doing video work for about 5 years now so check out some of my other stuff:

These videos are also on youtube FYI. The Spooks song features members of Deerhunter and Black Lips.
Yeah I used to post on the Flaming Lips list a long time ago. They were my teenage fave.
I'm hoping I can make an "official" video with the guys actually in it eventually... Maybe for a different song..
I stumbled across this blog through the deerhunter blog - I just wanna say I love the Cover Me Slowly video. The song always reminded me of the beginning of Twin Peaks too, I think the video you've made is perfect for the song. can I ask what software program you used?
I used After Effects CS3 and I don't think I used any special plug-ins for these videos. I used my aunt's camera to take them cos mine was busted and Samsung's customer service department must be located on Europa for all the good it's been. She just has an old model that takes video at 640x480 13 fps. It might be a higher fps but I definitely know it was kind of low so I had to pull some tricks to get it to work.
Fucking awesome, Adam. The one for microcastles is like if Stan Brakhage went tumbling down a mountain side or took a swandive off a cliff..
hey, I heard Deerhunter is playing in nyc on sunday, is this true?
cheers
The video for Microcastle is incredible. I thought that the first half was very beautiful. I reminded me of being half awake half asleep, and I really like the way that it faded in and out with the music. I equally enjoyed the ending. You definitely captured the rush at the end of the song. I think you took a simple concept and really made it work. Parts of it reminded me of photographs. Typically I don't get that into music videos, but you've really outdone yourself here. AMAZING WORK
I enjoyed those quite a bit. Thanks for sharing your work Adam. Thanks to Bradford and Deerhunter for allowing you to use their songs and collaborate, too. You guys made my evening.

Adam, I think these videos are absolutely beautiful (and very meditative, too). You did a great job capturing the change in "Microcastle." I just got back from a winter mountain trip myself (listening to Deerhunter in the car, even) so this feels like part of the trip!
take care,
